Karua Declares Bid for Opposition Presidential Ticket in 2027

People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua has reaffirmed her intention to seek the opposition coalition’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Karua said she has no interest in becoming a running mate but is willing to support whoever is selected as the coalition’s flag bearer without serving as deputy president.

She expressed confidence that despite competition from other prominent opposition figures, she will mount a strong campaign and secure the nomination.

Karua added that to avoid disputes among interested candidates, the opposition coalition should establish and sign a common framework outlining the rules of engagement and committing all contenders to respect the outcome of the nomination process.

The former running mate in the 2022 General Election also noted that her PLP party is conducting an independent nationwide campaign aimed at recruiting members and identifying candidates to contest various elective positions under the party’s ticket.

The question of who will challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections continues to dominate opposition politics, with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Jubilee’s Fred Matiang’i, DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua, and Martha Karua all expressing interest in the presidency.

However, the Kenya Kwanza administration and some political critics have continued to fault the opposition, claiming it lacks a clear direction and a credible agenda for Kenyans.
