Deputy President Kindiki Warns Against Unrest and Indiscipline in High Schools

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has warned against the rising cases of indiscipline and unrest in high schools, emphasizing that the government will not tolerate actions that endanger lives or destroy property.

Speaking after receiving a briefing from Ministry of Education officials led by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba at Harambee House Annex, Nairobi, Kindiki stated that while students may have legitimate grievances, they should not be resolved through violence, arson, or other criminal acts.

He expressed the government’s disappointment with the wave of unrest witnessed in some high schools, noting that some of these incidents have resulted in fatalities and massive destruction of property.

The Deputy President explained that the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with various stakeholders, is working to find a lasting solution to end the recurring incidents of unrest in educational institutions.

He also emphasized that reforms in the education sector are being successfully implemented, stating that the government has made progress in improving the education system, which was plagued by various challenges before 2022.

Regarding the decision to close some schools following incidents of unrest or suspected arson, Kindiki defended the move, saying it is a precautionary measure aimed at protecting the lives of students, teachers, and school property while investigations are ongoing.
