Severe Hunger Crisis Hits South Sudan

Families and children in Jonglei State, South Sudan, are reportedly surviving on leaves and water lilies as hunger levels approach famine conditions.

According to the international charity Save the Children, millions of people across the country are facing acute food shortages driven by conflict, insecurity and economic hardship.

Latest food security assessments indicate that more than 7.8 million people are experiencing severe hunger, while some regions are on the verge of famine.

The crisis has also had a devastating impact on children, with many dropping out of school as families struggle to survive.

Others have reportedly been pushed into child labour and early marriages as households seek ways to cope with worsening economic conditions.

Humanitarian organizations warn that the situation could deteriorate further unless urgent assistance reaches affected communities.

South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation, gained independence in 2011 but continues to face significant challenges including poverty, corruption, political instability and recurring violence.
