Kenya begins construction of 10 Mother and Child Hospitals

Date:

Kenya has begun expanding maternal and child healthcare infrastructure with the construction of the first of 10 specialised Mother and Child hospitals under a Sh4.5 billion partnership between the government and Amsons Group.

The first facility, the Chebunyo Mother and Child Hospital, is a Level 4 facility in Bomet County. President William Ruto laid the foundation stone for the project on Saturday, September 12, marking the start of the nationwide initiative.

The initiative, implemented through Amsons Group’s corporate social investment programme, is expected to improve access to maternal, newborn and child healthcare, particularly in areas with limited specialised services.

Amsons Group Managing Director Edha Nahdi said the company plans to complete all 10 facilities within two years.

“This ceremony marks the beginning of a major commitment by Amsons Group to support the Government of Kenya in improving access to quality maternal, newborn and child healthcare,” Nahdi said.

The hospitals will be established in Nairobi, Bomet, Kwale, Mombasa, Garissa, Kisumu, Embu, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu and West Pokot, with each facility expected to have a capacity of 250 beds.

Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said the facilities will provide specialised services including maternity care, newborn units, neonatal intensive care and operating theatres for emergency and elective Caesarean sections.

The projects are being developed under a Build, Equip and Transfer model in partnership with the Ministry of Health and are intended to complement government efforts to strengthen health infrastructure and reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths.
