MP Oundo explains choice of Jacaranda Grounds for Linda Mwananchi rally

Date:

Funyula Member of Parliament Dr. Wilberforce Oundo has provided insight into why the opposition’s Linda Mwananchi movement chose Nairobi’s iconic Jacaranda Grounds for its major political rally over the weekend.

Speaking during a morning television interview on Monday, September 14, 2026, Oundo stated that the decision to assemble at Jacaranda Grounds in Embakasi East was a calculated move to honor the legacy and claim the political space of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Jacaranda Grounds has historically served as a stronghold for opposition gatherings, frequenting as the backdrop for major political pronouncements by Raila Odinga throughout his career. Oundo emphasized that hosting the movement’s Nairobi mobilization tour at the venue was intended to signal continuity to supporters in the capital.

“We brought the spirit of Baba Raila Amollo Odinga to his home turf of Nairobi. We wanted to tell the people of Kenya that we have inherited the spirit and the numbers of Baba Raila Amollo Odinga,” Oundo stated.

Oundo noted that the rally aimed to demonstrate the movement’s strength and consolidate political support in Nairobi ahead of the 2027 General Election.

He added that key movement leaders, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, are stepping into opposition leadership roles to maintain momentum in regions traditionally aligned with the opposition.

The event drew thousands of supporters who accompanied the Linda Mwananchi convoy through parts of the Nairobi Central Business District, Marikiti Market, and along Jogoo Road before filling Jacaranda Grounds to capacity.
