Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has praised supporters and organizers for maintaining peace during the high-stakes Linda Mwananchi rally held on Sunday, September 13, across key parts of Nairobi.
Addressing the public following the event, Onyonka highlighted the peaceful nature of the gathering, noting that citizens demonstrated political maturity despite pre-rally tensions and a heavy security presence in the capital.
The Linda Mwananchi movement—spearheaded by key opposition figures including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino—proceeded with their scheduled tour on Sunday despite security warnings issued regarding rallies within the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).
A motorcade snake-lined through the city center before ending in public engagements at Marikiti Market and Jacaranda Grounds. Speaking on the proceedings, Onyonka emphasized that exercising constitutional rights to assemble does not have to lead to chaos or destruction of property.
“Kenyans showed that they can stand up for their rights and voice their concerns peacefully without resorting to violence or confrontation,” Onyonka stated during his press briefing following the event.
The rally served as a platform for the Linda Mwananchi group to address pressing national economic challenges, governance concerns, and high living costs. Onyonka reaffirmed his commitment to the movement, urging the state to respect democratic opposition and peaceful civic gatherings rather than deploying intimidation tactics or goons to disrupt public meetings.
The peaceful conclusion of Sunday’s assembly comes after earlier political engagements in previous months were marred by localized disruptions. Organizers have indicated that the Linda Mwananchi initiative will continue its regional tours to engage citizens directly on national issues.
