Kenyan champions Gor Mahia have been eliminated from the CAF Champions League after suffering a 7-1 aggregate defeat to Egyptian side Pyramids in the first preliminary round. Gor Mahia lost 5-1 to Pyramids in the second-leg match played in Cairo, Egypt, on September 13, 2026, ending their campaign in the continental competition.
Pyramids, under coach Rulani Mokwena, produced a strong performance from the start and secured a 5-1 victory over Gor Mahia in the second leg. The result saw Pyramids advance to the second preliminary round with a 7-1 aggregate win, despite Gor Mahia winning the first leg 2-0 in Nairobi.
Speaking after the match, Pyramids head coach Rulani Mokwena expressed his satisfaction with the victory and the team’s progress to the next stage of the competition. “I am happy with this victory and with progressing to the next stage of the competition. The players did a good job and deserved this result,” said Mokwena.
Walid El Karti, who had scored Pyramids’ first goal in the first leg, opened the scoring again in the 27th minute. Eleven minutes later, Nasser Maher added a second goal to give the hosts a 2-0 lead. Youssef Obama increased Gor Mahia’s troubles by scoring Pyramids’ third goal in first-half stoppage time. However, Paul Okoth pulled one back for the Kenyan champions.
After four goals were scored in the first half, Gor Mahia tried to limit the damage after the break, while Pyramids also reduced the intensity of their attacks. However, the hosts scored two more goals in stoppage time through Mustafa Zico and Mahmoud Zalaka to complete a 5-1 victory.
This is the second time in two years that Gor Mahia have been eliminated in the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League. In 2024, the Kenyan side suffered a 6-0 aggregate defeat to Egyptian giants Al Ahly, the last time they participated in the competition.
Pyramids will now face South Sudanese side Merriekh Bentiu in the second preliminary round after the team defeated Somalia’s Heegan SC 4-0 on aggregate.For Gor Mahia, attention will now turn to defending their FKF Premier League title when the new season begins on September 19, 2026.
