TANZANIA-The treason case against Tanzania’s opposition CHADEMA Chairman, Tundu Lissu, is expected to continue today, Monday, September 14, 2026, with CHADEMA Mainland Vice-Chairman John Heche set to face questions from the prosecution.
Heche completed giving his testimony before the High Court on Friday, where he addressed issues surrounding a CHADEMA meeting held on April 3, 2025. Statements made during the meeting have been linked to part of the charges facing Lissu.
Heche told the court that Lissu was not involved in organising the meeting but had been invited as the chief guest and keynote speaker.
“Lissu was not involved in the preparations for the meeting; he was invited as the chief guest and main speaker,” Heche told the court.
He also said Lissu’s remarks about stopping or disrupting the election referred to the use of democratic means.
Regarding the October 29, 2025 General Election, Heche said Lissu had no role in the events that occurred on election day because he had already been arrested.
After Heche completed his testimony, the court allowed the prosecution to begin questioning him. However, Principal State Attorney Nassor Katuga requested that the case be adjourned until today, saying the prosecution had many questions arising from the evidence given by the witness.
The proceedings are expected to continue with Heche facing cross-examination by the prosecution.
