EACC arrests Kisumu KRA officer in Sh100,000 tax debt bribe trap

Date:

An officer attached to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Debt Enforcement Department in Kisumu is in custody following his arrest during a sting operation by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) detectives on September 14.

The officer was apprehended while allegedly receiving a Sh30,000 installment of a Sh100,000 bribe demanded to fraudulently cancel a Sh4.5 million tax debt owed by a local construction firm.

According to investigators, the suspect claimed he could manipulate the KRA iTax system to write off the company’s entire tax liability. EACC officers launched preliminary inquiries after receiving a tip-off from the affected firm, leading to the suspect’s arrest as the money changed hands.

The officer was taken to Kisumu Central Police Station, where he recorded a statement and remains detained as anti-graft detectives conclude their investigations.

The EACC is expected to forward the file to the Director of Public Prosecutions with recommendations for formal charges. The commission reiterated that the suspect remains presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

This latest enforcement action underscores the EACC’s ongoing crackdown on bribery and abuse of office within public institutions, with the agency urging citizens and businesses to report corrupt public officials.
