Five people, among them two women and two juveniles, have died following a head-on collision involving a PSV bus and a Toyota IST along the Gilgil-Nakuru Road.
The crash happened at around 11pm on Sunday, September 13, 2026, in the Kamugunda area.
Police said the PSV bus was headed towards Nakuru from Gilgil when its driver allegedly failed to keep to his side of the road and instead entered an acceleration lane.
The move is said to have resulted in a head-on collision with the Toyota IST, which was travelling in the opposite direction.
Four occupants of the Toyota IST two female adults and two juveniles died at the scene.
The car’s driver sustained serious injuries and was rushed to St Joseph Hospital, where he later died while undergoing treatment, bringing the number of fatalities from the crash to five.
Police said the bodies were taken to PNN Funeral Home pending identification and postmortem examinations.
The two vehicles were towed to the police station yard, where they have been detained for inspection as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash continue.
The incident was among several road crashes reported across the country on Sunday that left at least 16 people dead.
Police said the wider accidents also claimed the lives of five passengers, six pedestrians, four riders and one driver, while 15 other people sustained serious injuries.
The latest fatalities have renewed concerns over road safety, particularly the rising number of pedestrian deaths.
Police have attributed some pedestrian fatalities to people crossing roads at undesignated points, including areas near footbridges.
Authorities have been taking enforcement measures against pedestrians who avoid designated footbridges as they seek to reduce road deaths.
More than 4,000 people are killed in road crashes in Kenya every year, while thousands of others suffer serious injuries, creating a significant burden for affected families.
Investigations into the Gilgil-Nakuru crash are ongoing.
