Women Leaders Rally Behind Ruto

A group of women leaders has called on Kenyans to support President William Ruto’s bid for a second term, citing what they described as his strong development record and commitment to inclusive governance.

Led by Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, the leaders spoke during a women empowerment event hosted by Taita Taveta Woman Representative Lydia Haika in Taita Taveta County.

The leaders praised President Ruto’s development initiatives, saying his administration has demonstrated fairness in the distribution of national resources and inclusivity in government appointments. They argued that ongoing development projects across the country are evidence of the administration’s commitment to improving livelihoods.

Waiguru dismissed claims that the Mt Kenya region had abandoned President Ruto and urged residents to continue supporting government-led development initiatives.

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika echoed the sentiments, saying the President has shown commitment to empowering women leaders and promoting equitable development nationwide.

During the event, households and community groups received tents, wheelchairs, water tanks, cooking pots, and handcarts as part of the empowerment programme.

Flood victims in Tana River receive relief aid

Families affected by recent flooding in Tana River County have received relief assistance from the government as efforts to support vulnerable communities and strengthen disaster preparedness continue.

Principal Secretary for the State Department for Special Programmes, Ismail Maalim Madey, visited Kitere and Samicha villages in Garsen Constituency, where he led the distribution of food and other essential supplies to affected households.

During the visit, the PS met residents, listened to their concerns, and inspected flood-affected areas where livelihoods have been disrupted by rising waters.

Madey assured residents that the government remains committed to providing timely support while implementing measures aimed at reducing the impact of future weather-related disasters. He urged residents living in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow advisories issued by relevant authorities as the country prepares for the possibility of enhanced rainfall associated with El Niño.

The relief supplies are expected to help affected families recover and rebuild their livelihoods following the floods.

Governor Mwadime warns illegal herders in Taita Taveta County

Taita Taveta County Governor Andrew Mwadime has issued a stern warning to outside herders illegally bringing livestock, including camels and cattle, into the region and destroying local crops.

Governor Mwadime emphasized that the county government will no longer tolerate livestock entering the region outside the confines of the law.

“These are warnings. We have seen camels and cows coming this way, and many residents have come to my office crying because their crops have been destroyed by these animals. We will take action. I want to make it clear that the people of Taita Taveta are not cowards,” Governor Mwadime stated.

The Governor urged herders who have legitimate grazing agreements with local ranchers to ensure their livestock remain strictly within the boundaries of those private ranches.

To address the issue long-term, Governor Mwadime revealed that his administration is amending local laws to penalize complicit landowners and regulate influxes. The proposed legislation will introduce strict levies on ranchers who host livestock from neighboring counties.

“We are submitting a bill to the County Assembly, and a committee is already reviewing the issue. We want to impose a tax on all animals brought here from outside the county,” he added.

Garissa Gets New Blood Transfusion Centre

Residents of Kenya’s North eastern and parts of the Eastern region are set to benefit from improved access to blood transfusion services following the official opening of the Garissa Regional Blood Transfusion Centre.

Previously, blood collected in the region had to be transported to Nairobi for testing and screening, a process that often-caused delays, especially during emergencies when timely access to safe blood was critical.

Speaking during the commissioning of the facility, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale described the centre as a major milestone in strengthening healthcare services in the region. He said the facility would significantly reduce turnaround times, improve emergency response, and enhance patient outcomes.

Duale reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that no life is lost due to a lack of access to safe blood for transfusion.

The centre has the capacity to store more than 600 units of blood and is expected to strengthen regional preparedness while ensuring a reliable supply for hospitals and emergency situations.

Garissa Governor Nathif Jama welcomed the development, noting that the facility will improve blood collection, testing, storage, and distribution across the region. He also called for increased voluntary blood donation campaigns to prevent shortages that could put lives at risk.

Three women charged with kidnapping and violent robbery in Garissa

Three women have appeared before the Garissa Law Courts to face charges of kidnapping and robbery with violence against another woman, in an incident that allegedly took place on June 5, 2026, in Garissa town.

The suspects identified as Fartun Abdi Hassan, Hani Mohamed Salim, and Ifrah Abdi Ahmed denied the charges before Resident Magistrate Rachael Ng’ang’a. A fourth suspect, Ayan Ahmed, was released after the victim failed to identify her during an identification parade.

The prosecution states that the three suspects, alongside others still at large, allegedly kidnapped the victim, assaulted her, and robbed her of a mobile phone valued at Ksh 1,500.

The victim requested the court to deny the accused bail, claiming that they had threatened her.

The suspects pleaded for release, arguing that they have young children who depend on them.

Resident Magistrate Ng’ang’a granted the suspects a bond of Ksh 500,000 each, or an alternative cash bail of Ksh 300,000.

The case is scheduled for mention on July 1, 2026.

Former Taita Taveta County Assembly acting speaker Anselm Mwadime Chao has officially defected to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) while launching a fierce critique against the assembly’s current leadership lineup.

​Chao, the current Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Mwanda Mghange ward, labeled the two month old leadership structure unfair and unrepresentative. He questioned why ODM was allocated only one leadership position despite holding the majority of seats in the county assembly, arguing that minority parties were disproportionately favored.

​Speaking in Nairobi during an ODM consultative meeting, the second-term lawmaker called on the party’s national leadership specifically Dr. Oburu Odinga to intervene and restructure the assembly’s hierarchy.

​”We need an urgent overhaul of the assembly’s leadership,” Chao stated. “It defies political logic for a party with the majority of MCAs to be sidelined with just a single post.”

​Chao, who defected from the Pamoja African Alliance (PAA), pledged his loyalty to ODM and vowed to secure a clean sweep for the party in Taita Taveta during the next general election.

He also revealed that a larger political shift is underway, noting that Werugha Ward MCA Genard Mwandau and Kasighau MCA Amos Makalo are also finalizing plans to cross over to ODM.

Taita Taveta Governor Andrew Mwadime has thrown his support behind the multi-million shilling Tsavo West National Park rhino sanctuary fence project, while issuing a stern demand for local economic inclusion.

​The mega-conservation project, recently launched by President William Ruto, aims to protect the endangered black rhino and mitigate long-standing human-wildlife conflict. 

Governor Mwadime noted that the sanctuary is poised to boost the regional hospitality sector, spur the development of luxury lodges, and expand the county’s revenue base through tourism taxes.

​However, the Governor strongly criticized local tourism and conservation stakeholders for sidelining residents. He warned hotel and lodge managers within the Tsavo ecosystem to prioritize locals for jobs, announcing plans to personally audit staff registers to check compliance.

​Mwadime also took aim at the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), accusing the state agency of bypassing local contractors for lucrative supply and construction tenders. He challenged KWS to reform its procurement policies and appoint qualified Taita Taveta residents to top-tier management positions within the corporation.

France captain Kylian Mbappé has pledged to step up his defensive work-rate as Les Bleus prepare to launch their World Cup campaign against Senegal on Tuesday.

The 27-year-old Real Madrid forward has recently found himself under intense scrutiny regarding his form and leadership for both club and country. However, teammate Ousmane Dembélé quickly rushed to his defense, publicly stating that the media backlash had gone “too far.”

In a candid feature with French newspaper Le Parisien, Mbappé fielded questions from close friends and teammates. When lightly mocked about his defensive tracking by his younger brother Ethan who currently plays for Ligue 1 outfit Lille the French superstar took the critique in stride and admitted there is room for improvement.

“I need to take the extra step [with my defensive work] because it’s something important for the team and I have to do it,” Mbappé confessed. “It will start this time because we want to win, and to win, I’m ready to do whatever because I want to win at all costs.”

Kenya Strongly Protests Israel’s Entry Ban Over Ebola Fears

Kenya has strongly complained about Israel’s decision to ban its citizens from entering the country due to the spread of Ebola.

The disease has been reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda, with at least over 150 deaths reported so far.

In a letter written to airlines on June 10, Amnon Shmueli, Israel’s Head of Border Control at Ben Gurion International Airport, directed airlines not to carry foreign nationals and citizens of four East African countries to Israel. These countries include Kenya, the DRC, South Sudan, Rwanda, and Uganda.

Meanwhile, Kenya has agreed to construct a quarantine center to treat American citizens found to be infected with Ebola in the DRC. However, this move has been halted by the court and faced fierce opposition from residents of Nanyuki, where the center was intended to be built.

Kenya has not reported any cases of Ebola up to this point.
