Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera Daraja has called on Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to investigate alleged violence against Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) by groups associated with Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa.
The demands follow an incident in Lugari where six MCAs were physically attacked during a public event. Reports indicate that lawmakers, including Lugari Ward MCA Grey Moyi and Lumakanda Ward MCA Hon. Bokanda, sustained injuries that required medical treatment after the violence broke out.
Critics and political opponents claim the MCAs were targeted due to their vocal criticism of the county administration’s governance and resource allocation, particularly regarding infrastructure and healthcare initiatives in the region.
Nabwera urged security agencies to take immediate legal action and ensure safety for all elected leaders and residents across Kakamega County. He warned that unresolved political intimidation threatens regional stability.
Governor Fernandes Barasa has previously rejected accusations of sponsoring political violence. He maintains a public stance condemning political intimidation and calling on local leaders to resolve political rivalries peacefully while allowing law enforcement agencies to investigate any breaches of the law.
Police authorities have not yet issued a formal report detailing arrests related to the incident, as investigations into the clashes continue.
