Liverpool rally past Atletico Madrid in Champions League opener

LIVERPOOL, UK — Liverpool secured a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against Atlético Madrid at Anfield to kick off their UEFA Champions League campaign in style.

The Spanish visitors struck first when Marcos Llorente capitalized on early pressure to put Atlético ahead in the 17th minute. However, Liverpool quickly responded as Dominik Szoboszlai found the net in the 40th minute following a VAR check to bring the Reds back on level terms before halftime.

Just four minutes into the second half, Alexis Mac Allister scored the match-winner in the 49th minute to put Liverpool ahead. The home side successfully contained Diego Simeone’s squad through the remainder of the second half, earning three points in their opening fixture.
