Kenya has reaffirmed its commitment to regional peace and security as Deputy President Kithure Kindiki joined African leaders in Uganda for high-level talks on the future of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
Kindiki, who is representing President William Ruto at the 2nd Extra-Ordinary AUSSOM Summit in Entebbe, said Kenya remains committed to supporting efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace in Somalia.
The summit has brought together Heads of State, senior government officials and regional security representatives to assess the progress of the African Union mission and discuss the next phase of security support for Somalia.
Among the key issues on the agenda are the mission’s operational strategy, sustainable financing and continued international support as Somalia gradually assumes greater responsibility for its own security.
Kenya remains one of the largest troop-contributing countries to the African Union mission and has played a central role in counter-terrorism operations against the Al-Shabaab militant group for more than a decade.
In a statement shared on X, Kindiki confirmed he was attending the summit on behalf of President William Ruto.
“Arrived in Entebbe, Uganda, to represent Kenya during the 2nd Extra-Ordinary Summit of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) on behalf of President William Ruto,” he said.
The outcome of the summit is expected to shape the future of the AU mission as regional leaders seek long-term solutions to security challenges in Somalia while safeguarding stability across the Horn of Africa.
