MANCHESTER, ENGLAND — Joško Gvardiol has officially signed a new five-year contract extension at Manchester City, cementing his place as a cornerstone of the club’s defensive setup until at least June 2031. The deal also includes an option to extend for a sixth season.
The 24-year-old Croatian international, who arrived at the Etihad Stadium from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023 for £77 million, expressed his delight after finalizing the deal.

Gvardiol becomes the latest defensive leader to sign a contract extension following Abdukodir Khusanov’s long-term commitment, reinforcing City’s backline following the departures of senior leaders John Stones and Nathan Aké.
Since arriving in 2023, Gvardiol has accumulated 122 appearances, scoring 13 goals and delivering 10 assists across all competitions.
After a standout 2024/25 campaign, Gvardiol was voted Manchester City’s Player of the Season.
City Sporting Director Hugo Viana praised the defender’s progression, calling him “already one of the best defenders in the world” who perfectly embodies the club’s vision for a modern, versatile defender.
