Solar water projects boost Turkana’s Kangatotha Ward

Residents of Loyoro and Napeget villages in Kangatotha Ward now have renewed hope for clean and reliable water after the Turkana County Government commissioned two upgraded rural water supply projects.

Implemented by the Turkana Rural Water Services Company (TURWASCO) in partnership with Feed the Children Kenya, the projects were officially handed over on Thursday, July 6, 2026. They form part of the county’s ongoing push to address water scarcity in rural communities.

The newly completed schemes feature a range of modern infrastructure upgrades designed for long-term sustainability. Key components include the solarization of existing water systems to drastically cut running costs, the installation of new water distribution pipelines, the construction of community water points and dedicated livestock watering troughs, and the upgrading of water storage facilities.

County officials say these improvements will provide a dependable supply of safe water for households while simultaneously supporting livestock keeping—the primary source of livelihood for the residents of Loyoro and Napeget.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, TURWASCO Managing Director Victorsam Ekaran announced that the utility company has officially taken over the operation and maintenance of both projects.

“Our goal is to ensure these systems remain functional and continue serving the people for the long term,” Ekaran said. He stressed that proper management, regular maintenance, and community cooperation will be vital to sustaining water services in the two villages.

Feed the Children Kenya Country Director, Jacktone Otieno, praised the seamless collaboration between the County Government, the Department of Water, local administrators, and community leaders.

“This success is a result of strong partnership and community ownership,” Otieno noted. “When we work together, we deliver lasting solutions.”

Under the new arrangement, TURWASCO will provide technical expertise and operational oversight. This structure ensures the systems are efficiently managed and will continue delivering clean water to Loyoro and Napeget for years to come.

The commissioning marks another milestone in Turkana County’s efforts to expand access to safe drinking water and strengthen infrastructure in underserved rural areas. County officials have indicated that more similar projects are planned across the region as part of a broader strategy to achieve universal access to clean water.
