Refugee nations tournament promotes peace and talent in Kakuma and Kalobeyei

The Refugee Nations Football Tournament is gaining momentum in Kakuma and Kalobeyei camps, using sport to promote peace, unity, and youth talent across refugee communities.

More than just a competition, the tournament brings together teams representing over 19 nationalities to foster peaceful coexistence and steer young people away from drugs, crime, and idleness.

“Our main goal is not trophies. It is to unite young people from different nations and give them a positive platform to showcase talent,” said Tournament Coordinator Juma Tut Nhiel on July 19, 2026.

The camps are home to refugees from South Sudan, DRC, Somalia, Ethiopia, Burundi, Rwanda and 13 other countries. Each nation fields its own team, creating healthy rivalry and stronger bonds between communities and their host neighbors.

One of the tournament’s highlights was a quarter-final at Kalobeyei Village 2 Ground where Burundi beat Somalia 3-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw to book a semi-final slot.

Organizers say the tournament is also a scouting ground. Talented players are getting noticed by clubs, scouts, and organizations offering sports scholarships and education opportunities.

“Football has the power to bring people together regardless of nationality or background. We want our youth to focus on sports, education, and building a better future.” Juma Tut Nhiel added.

For many participants, the games are a chance to build discipline, leadership, and friendships while opening doors to professional football or further studies.

As the tournament progresses, organizers say it is proving that football can unite diverse cultures and inspire hope for a brighter future in the camps.

Sagante Jaldesa residents protest over poor state of Badassa–Saku road

Residents of Sagante Jaldesa in Saku Constituency, Marsabit County, on Monday staged a peaceful protest over the deteriorating condition of the Badassa–Saku road, calling on the national government to urgently rehabilitate the key transport route.


The demonstrators said the road has remained in a poor state for years despite repeated promises by the government to repair it.


According to the residents, the Badassa–Saku road is a vital link connecting Marsabit, Isiolo, and Wajir counties, making it crucial for trade, transportation, and security.


They argued that its poor condition has disrupted the movement of people and goods while exposing motorists, passengers, and pedestrians to criminal attacks.


The protesters also reminded President William Ruto of his pledge made last month during a meeting with Marsabit leaders at State House, Nairobi, where he announced that KSh100 million had been allocated for the rehabilitation of the road.


However, they said no rehabilitation work has commenced.


To press their demands, the residents briefly blocked the road using logs and stones, insisting that the demonstration was peaceful and intended to compel the government to act.


They warned that the condition of the road would be a key factor in how they vote in the 2027 General Election, saying they are demanding action rather than promises.


The protesters vowed to keep the road closed until they see tangible rehabilitation works begin.

Man charged in Marsabit court over alleged motorcycle arson

A man has been charged before the Marsabit Law Courts with malicious damage to property after allegedly setting a motorcycle on fire in Mountain Ward, Marsabit Central Sub-County.

The accused, Mustafa Said Jillo, is alleged to have willfully and unlawfully burned a motorcycle belonging to Suleiman Hido Shano on June 25, 2026. The motorcycle was valued at KSh100,000.

Jillo was arrested on July 7, 2026, and arraigned before Senior Principal Magistrate Christine Wekesa, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

During the court proceedings, the accused told the court that he had been assaulted by members of the public following the incident. In response, the court directed that he be taken to hospital for medical treatment before being returned to custody.

The court further ordered that Jillo be remanded at Marsabit Prison pending the hearing of his case.

The matter is scheduled to be mentioned on July 27, 2026, when the court is expected to issue further directions.

Authorities have not disclosed the motive behind the alleged arson, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

As with all criminal proceedings, the accused is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

Turkana leaders trade barbs as calls for unity and 2027 political accountability dominate public events

Political temperatures in Turkana County continued to rise over the weekend as Kakuma Ward MCA Eliud Emoni and Turkana South MP Dr. John Ariko Namoit used separate public gatherings to criticize political leadership, call for unity, and urge residents to prepare for the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a funeral service in Towokayeni Village, Kakuma, MCA Eliud Emoni condemned what he described as political double standards among some local leaders, accusing them of changing their loyalties depending on which leader they were addressing.

“There are people who want to eat from both sides. When the governor arrives, they say ‘Tutam.’ When another leader stands before them, they will also call that leader ‘Tutam.’ Today, what will you tell the people? You are someone who eats from the front and then goes back to eat from the back,” Emoni said.

His remarks followed an incident in which some leaders were reportedly not given an opportunity to speak during the funeral, while others who addressed mourners left before the burial ceremony had concluded. Emoni cautioned leaders against using funeral services and other community events to advance political interests.

The MCA also appealed for unity among the people of Turkana West, saying internal divisions were undermining the region’s progress.

“We are the ones confusing ourselves by fighting one another. Let us first fix our problems at home before looking elsewhere. We should stop undermining one another in secret. Even when professionals are invited to help address these issues, few people come forward. Nevertheless, we will continue bringing people together,” he said.

While reaffirming his support for the current county administration, Emoni stressed that leadership positions are temporary and urged residents to maintain peace and elect leaders democratically in the 2027 General Election.

Meanwhile, during his three-day Suguta Valley Meet-the-People Tour at Kapedo Waterfall in Turkana East, Turkana South MP Dr. John Ariko Namoit criticized Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai Napotikan, accusing him of neglecting Kapedo and taking residents of Turkana East for granted.

According to Ariko, the governor had never visited Kapedo to seek votes or engage directly with residents.

“Remember, what you received came by the grace of God. Don’t use it to look down on or disparage others. The 2027 elections are fast approaching, and everyone will reap what they have sown,” Ariko said.

The MP cited the outcome of the recent Ol Kalau by-election, saying it should remind leaders that political office is ultimately determined by the will of the people.

“The Ol Kalau by-election sends a powerful message to all leaders: never use what you have received through grace to look down on others. Not every success is solely the result of hard work, just as not every failure is the result of laziness. Circumstances, opportunity, timing and, above all, the will of the people often shape political outcomes,” he said.

Ariko called on leaders to embrace humility and accountability, arguing that every election offers valuable lessons for those in public office.

Turning his attention to county governance, the MP said his experience in both the county and national governments had prepared him to lead Turkana County.

“Look at me today and compare me with Governor Lomorukai. I have experience. I studied public finance and how to safeguard the resources of the people of Turkana. What experience does the governor have? Is it the experience of spending the people’s money?” he asked.

He also alleged that county government offices, including ward and sub-county offices, were struggling because officials lacked sufficient operational support, including transport to perform their duties.

“Look at what our ward offices, sub-county offices and village administrators are going through. Some cannot even get transport to carry out government duties. Is that the kind of leadership you want?” Ariko asked.

The remarks by both leaders underscore the growing political activity in Turkana County as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election. While Emoni emphasized unity, peaceful elections and an end to internal divisions, Turkana South MP focused on leadership, accountability and governance, with both leaders urging residents to carefully consider their choices when they head to the ballot in 2027.

FKF Turkana County League Race intensifies as midweek fixtures are confirmed following thrilling matchday

Action intensified in the FKF Turkana County League last weekend as clubs battled for crucial points in an entertaining round of fixtures that produced 24 goals across seven matches.

Tumaini FC recorded the biggest victory of the round after thrashing Supa United FC 5-0 in a dominant performance that strengthened their position in the league standings. Highland FC also enjoyed an impressive outing, comfortably defeating Loyo FC 4-0 to collect maximum points.

Young Legends FC edged Homeboys FC 3-2 in a thrilling five-goal encounter, while Kalokol Rangers and Bunge FC shared the spoils in an entertaining 3-3 draw while Marble Ndogo FC secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Black Bird FC, as Canaan FC and Kerio Superstars FC settled for a 2-2 draw.

Nawoitorong Rangers and Kalokol FC played out the only goalless match of the round, finishing 0-0.

Meanwhile, FKF Turkana has released the midweek fixtures as teams prepare for another crucial round of matches.

On Wednesday, July 22, Marble Ndogo FC will host Canaan United FC at Napuu, Supa United FC will take on Narewa FC at Nakwamekwi, while Kailosta FC face Earthmovers FC at Kainuk.

Linda Mwananchi warns against disruption of rallies, Mwashako defies UDA overtures

Linda Mwananchi leaders have warned that they will not tolerate goons disrupting their meetings, accusing the government of failing to provide security.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, speaking in Voi, condemned the use of hired youth to cause chaos at opposition events. 

“We will not beg goons. The government must create jobs for young people instead of using them to cause violence,” Owino said.

In a separate address, MP Danson Mwashako said he would not be coerced into joining the ruling UDA party. He referenced an incident where Deputy President Kithure Kindiki allegedly tried to force a UDA cap on him.

“I have been pressured to join government but I remain firm in Linda Mwananchi and the opposition. You don’t have to be in government to serve the people,” Mwashako stated.

He declared Taita Taveta a stronghold of Linda Mwananchi and dismissed both UDA and ODM influence in the county. 

“We believe Linda Mwananchi will form the next government,” Mwashako added.

Linda Mwananchi leaders have promised to prioritize unresolved water and land problems in Taita Taveta County if elected in 2027, accusing the Kenya Kwanza administration of failing to deliver on its promises.

Addressing crowds in Mwatate, Wundanyi and Voi over the weekend, movement leader Senator Edwin Sifuna criticized President Ruto over delays in implementing the Mzima Springs Phase 2 water project. 

“The government made promises about water and then disappeared. A Linda Mwananchi government will give you water and secure your land,” Sifuna said.

Wundanyi MP Danson Mwashako faulted the national government for excluding locals in project planning, saying some ongoing projects were of little benefit compared to stalled ones.

The rally also turned into an endorsement for MP Mwashako’s bid for Taita Taveta governor. Sifuna, Orengo and Osotsi praised Mwashako for defending citizens’ rights and pledged the movement’s full support.

“Mwashako has shown he can deliver. He has the vision to transform Taita Taveta using local resources,” Orengo said. 

Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant Babu Owino also vouched for Mwashako’s development record.

Linda Mwananchi breaks away from ODM, moves to register as political party

The opposition movement Linda Mwananchi has formally announced its split from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and declared plans to register as an independent political party ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a rally in Voi on Saturday, Siaya Governor James Orengo accused ODM of abandoning its founding principles by associating with a government linked to corruption, extrajudicial killings, and land grabbing.

“ODM has died. We can no longer stay in a party that has betrayed the people,” Orengo told supporters.

The announcement was backed by Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, the former ODM deputy leader.

Linda Mwananchi spokesperson and Suba South MP Caroli Omondi called on the Registrar of Political Parties to approve their registration, alleging that President William Ruto had issued directives to block the movement.

“We are telling the President: release our party,” Omondi said.

According to the movement’s leaders, Governor Orengo will serve as party leader while Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has been fronted as the movement’s presidential candidate for 2027.

This comes a few days after the Nairobi Senator was removed as the Senate Deputy Minority Whip and replaced by Migori Senator Eddy Oketch.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced the leadership change in a communication to the House during Thursday afternoon’s plenary sitting.

“By a letter dated 16th July 2026, I received correspondence from the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Stewart Madzayo, regarding the removal of Senator Edwin Sifuna as the Deputy Senate Minority Whip and the election of Senator Eddy Gicheru Oketch to replace him,” Speaker Kingi told the House.

The latest development comes a week after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) formally recognized Sifuna’s removal as ODM Secretary General, bringing to an end month of uncertainty following a National Executive Committee (NEC) resolution that ousted him from the party’s top administrative position.

In a letter addressed to Sifuna at his Parliament Buildings office, the Registrar of Political Parties said his removal complied with both the Political Parties Act and the ODM Constitution.

The development marks a major realignment in the opposition ahead of next year’s polls.

Garissa residents urged to uphold peace ahead of Kenya’s 2027 general election

Residents of Garissa County have been urged to maintain peace, unity and national cohesion as Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Election.

The call was made during a peace-building training workshop for religious leaders organized by the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK) at a hotel in Garissa.

Speaking at the event, Sheikh Abdillahi Salat emphasized the critical role religious leaders must play in promoting reconciliation before, during and after the elections. He noted that faith leaders have a responsibility to foster dialogue and unity between election winners and losers to prevent political differences from escalating into conflict.

“Religious leaders have a duty to preach peace and reconciliation to everyone, regardless of the election outcome. We must work together to ensure our communities remain united,” Sheikh Salat said.

He urged religious leaders to actively engage their congregations in promoting tolerance and peaceful coexistence as the country heads into the election period.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Mohamed cautioned young people against allowing themselves to be manipulated by politicians seeking to incite violence or ethnic divisions for political gain.

He warned that some politicians exploit unemployed youth to cause unrest during election periods, urging young people to reject hate speech and instead become ambassadors of peace within their communities.

The Chairperson of the Garissa County Pastors’ Fellowship, Pastor John Mwaura, commended the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya for organizing the training, saying it would equip religious leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to spread messages of peace in churches, mosques and other places of worship.

Pastor Mwaura noted that religious institutions remain influential platforms for promoting national unity and encouraging citizens to reject divisive politics.

He also called on women to take a leading role in educating children and young people about the importance of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and rejecting ethnic hatred.

According to Pastor Mwaura, mothers play a unique role in shaping the values of future generations and can help build a society founded on unity, love and respect for diversity.

Also speaking at the event, Esther Musyoka urged residents of Garissa and Kenyans across the country to reject ethnic discrimination and refuse to be used by politicians to spread hatred and division.

She appealed to mothers nationwide to use their influence within families to instill values of peace and tolerance in children, helping prevent a repeat of the election-related violence witnessed in previous electoral cycles.

“Mothers spend a significant amount of time with their children at home. They have an important opportunity to teach them the values of love, unity and respect for people from different communities,” Musyoka said.

Participants at the workshop agreed that religious leaders, parents, youth and the wider community all have a shared responsibility to ensure that the 2027 General Election is conducted peacefully, free from ethnic conflict, political violence and hate speech.

President Ruto set to commission sh1 billion Isiolo meat processing plant

A state-of-the-art abattoir worth Sh1 billion in Isiolo County is set to be officially commissioned next week, 17 years after construction began. The facility, expected to be launched by President William Ruto, is being hailed as one of Kenya’s largest investments in the livestock sector and is expected to boost both local and international meat trade.

The facility underwent operational tests on Friday, during which cattle, goats and camels were slaughtered to assess the efficiency of its modern machinery, processing systems and food safety standards ahead of the official launch.

Construction of the project began in 2009 through a joint investment by the Isiolo County Government, which contributed Sh538 million, and the National Government, which provided Sh451 million. The abattoir sits on a vast parcel of land and features modern slaughtering, processing, packaging and cold storage facilities built to international standards.

Speaking during the testing exercise, Isiolo County Chief Officer for Livestock Godana Dida said the facility would transform the livestock industry in northern Kenya.

“The abattoir has the capacity to slaughter 300 cattle, 100 camels and up to 2,500 sheep and goats within an eight-hour shift. This is a major step towards adding value to livestock and improving the livelihoods of our pastoralist communities,” Dida said.

However, he acknowledged that Isiolo alone cannot supply enough livestock to meet the plant’s full capacity.

“We are already working with neighbouring counties to establish reliable livestock supply chains. Through regional collaboration, we are confident the facility will operate at full capacity,” he added.

Project Manager James Munyoki said the facility had been built in accordance with international food safety and hygiene standards, positioning Kenya to expand meat exports to global markets.

“The Isiolo Abattoir is among the most modern in the region. We have complied with World Health Organization guidelines and international meat safety standards, making our products competitive in international markets,” Munyoki said.

Environmental expert Dr. Lucy Murira said the facility is equipped with an advanced wastewater treatment system capable of recycling more than two million litres of wastewater every day while eliminating foul odours.

Isiolo Livestock Traders Association Chairman Mohamed Wario welcomed the project, saying it would provide a guaranteed market for pastoralists while creating investment opportunities in animal feed production, livestock fattening and value addition.
