0

Police have arrested an armed robbery suspect in Kitale town who fled after stealing a motorcycle at gunpoint from a boda boda rider in Marsabit County more than 400 kilometers away.

The suspect was intercepted by police officers at a petrol station in Kitale, Trans-Nzoia County. Marsabit County Commissioner Standley Kamande confirmed the arrest, noting that the suspect was tracking toward the Kenya-Uganda border.

“The suspect was caught by police officers at a petrol station in Kitale with the motorcycle he stole in the Majengo area. The man was suspected to be on his way to the Kenya-Uganda border before he was intercepted,” Commissioner Kamande said.

The attack occurred last Friday at around 9:45 PM at the Majengo estate in Marsabit town. Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspect posed as a customer at the JJ Centre Stage, hiring the rider to take him to Majengo.

Upon reaching the destination, the suspect drew a pistol and demanded the motorcycle, a Boxer model with registration number KMGV 939W.

A struggle ensued, leaving the victim with minor injuries and bruises on his knees and palms. During the physical scuffle, the suspect dropped a mini Ceska pistol and ammunition before successfully escaping on the stolen bike.

Responding police officers quickly secured the crime scene and recovered the dropped firearm. The weapon is currently being held as vital evidence at the Marsabit Police Station to support the prosecution.

The multi-county tracking operation ended successfully with the suspect’s arrest in Kitale. He is currently in police custody and is expected to be arraigned in court to face criminal charges.

In a vibrant display of sports diplomacy, Kakuma’s Westside FC and Tanganyika FC from the Kakuma Refugee Camp played out a hard-fought 1-1 draw in a friendly match aimed at promoting peace, unity, and cohesion between the host community and refugees.

Westside FC dominated the early exchanges, dictating the tempo of the game and rightfully taking a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

However, the second half started at a high tempo. The game’s dynamics shifted dramatically after a Westside FC player received a red card, reducing the team to 10 men. Capitalizing on the numerical advantage, Tanganyika FC mounted a roaring comeback, equalizing through a brilliant header to level the score.

Speaking after the final whistle, Westside FC coach Joram Juma emphasized that the final scoreline was secondary to the match’s ultimate goal. He noted that the fixture was specifically organized to strengthen peace, unity, and good relations between the host community and the refugees.

Haaland nets late winner as Norway edge Ivory Coast to reach last 16

Striker Erling Haaland emerged as Norway’s hero after scoring a dramatic late winner in the 86th minute to secure a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match played on Tuesday night in Dallas, Texas, United States.

Ivory Coast controlled large spells of possession throughout the contest but failed to capitalize on several promising opportunities in front of goal.

Norway broke the deadlock in the 39th minute through Antonio Nusa, who punished a defensive lapse by Ivory Coast to give his side a narrow lead heading into the halftime break.

Amad Diallo restored hope for the Elephants by equalizing in the 74th minute during their first-ever appearance in the World Cup knockout stage.

However, Ivory Coast’s defensive shortcomings proved costly once again, as Haaland was left unmarked to fire home the decisive goal four minutes from time.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult match, but we stayed calm until the very end,” Haaland said after the game.

The victory sends Norway through to the Round of 16, where they will face five-time world champions Brazil.

Captain Kylian Mbappé delivered another outstanding performance, scoring twice as France cruised to a 3-0 victory over Sweden in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 clash played overnight at New York Stadium in New Jersey, United States.

Mbappé opened the scoring in the 43rd minute, finishing off a pinpoint cross from Ousmane Dembélé to hand Didier Deschamps’ side a deserved lead before halftime, despite Sweden’s determined defensive efforts against France’s relentless attacks.

Bradley Barcola doubled France’s advantage after combining brilliantly with Michael Olise before setting up Mbappé, who calmly netted his second goal and France’s third in the 74th minute.

According to tournament statistics, Mbappé has now scored 18 goals in World Cup history, leaving him just one goal behind Lionel Messi. The French superstar has also taken his tally to six goals in this year’s tournament, matching Messi’s record.

“We’ve been playing well, and we need to stay focused as we move into the next stage,” France head coach Didier Deschamps said after the victory.

France will now travel to Philadelphia, where they will face Paraguay on Saturday in the Round of 16 as they continue their quest for a third FIFA World Cup title.

Kenya government’s stake in safaricom falls to 15 per cent after sh204.3 billion vodacom deal

0

The Kenyan government has reduced its shareholding in Safaricom to 15 per cent following the completion of the sale of a 20 per cent stake to South Africa’s Vodacom in a deal worth Sh204.3 billion.

The transaction, which was first announced in December 2025, was delayed by legal challenges filed by politicians and civil society groups who questioned the valuation used in the sale. However, the Court of Appeal recently dismissed the final challenge, paving the way for the deal’s completion.

The sale significantly strengthens Vodacom’s position in Safaricom, increasing its ownership stake to 55 per cent and giving the South African telecommunications giant greater influence over the company’s operations and strategic direction.

The transaction sparked intense public debate, with critics arguing that the government had sold the shares below their market value. Among those who publicly opposed the deal was Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, while several activist groups sought to block the transaction through the courts.

Despite the criticism, Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi defended the sale, saying the valuation reflected prevailing market conditions and that the proceeds would help the government finance key national priorities.

“The transaction was conducted at a fair market value, and the funds raised will support the government’s development agenda and other critical expenditure needs,” Mbadi said while defending the sale.

The completion of the transaction marks a major shift in Safaricom’s ownership structure, with the Kenyan government relinquishing a significant portion of its stake in one of East Africa’s most profitable companies.

Tsavo lions evade KWS rangers as Mbololo search intensifies

A massive tracking operation to capture two lions spotted roaming through the Mbololo area of Voi Constituency has entered its fourth consecutive day, as wildlife authorities scramble to ensure the safety of panicked local residents.

The ongoing search was confirmed by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Tsavo Deputy Warden, Wilson Njue, who stated that emergency response teams were deployed immediately after members of the public reported seeing the predators last Tuesday.

Despite an intense aerial and ground search, the elusive big cats have managed to evade wildlife rangers.

The proximity of Mbololo to Tsavo National Park frequently leads to human-wildlife conflict, but the presence of two active predators near residential areas has put the entire community on high alert. KWS has deployed additional ground units to comb through the dense thickets after aerial surveillance failed to spot the lions from above.

“We received distress calls from the community on Tuesday last week and immediately launched a tracking exercise to capture and safely return the two lions to the park,” Warden Njue explained. “However, despite deploying aircraft to conduct aerial patrols over the area, our officers have not yet physically sighted the lions.”

To reinforce the operation, KWS has deployed more boots on the ground to ensure a thorough sweep of the terrain. Warden Njue highly commended the Mbololo residents for their calm demeanor and close cooperation with rangers since the scare began.

He further implored locals to avoid confronting the animals if spotted, and instead relay tracking information directly to the authorities.

“Our officers are fully equipped and on standby. The moment these lions are located, we will safely capture them and translocate them back into the protected area,” Njue assured. “We appreciate the immense cooperation from the residents so far, and we urge them to remain vigilant and immediately report any fresh sightings or tracks to our team.”

Stakeholders rally to save the boy child and prioritize men’s mental health

0

In a direct response to rising mental health crises and suicide rates among men, Sifa FM, in partnership with local health organizations and community stakeholders, recently hosted the landmark Jamvi Mashinani 2026 forum.

The convention, anchored under the theme “Prioritizing Men’s Mental Health,” was held on Saturday at the Misharinyi Full Gospel Church in Marungu Ward, Voi Sub-County. The targeted drive brought together dozens of local men to engage face-to-face with professional psychologists, healthcare practitioners, and spiritual leaders.

Medical experts at the forum emphasized that safeguarding men’s psychological well-being is not just an individual necessity, but a core requirement for community stability.

Muriel Kinyanga, a registered nurse from the Moi County Referral Hospital, addressed the gathering on the critical need to dismantle cultural barriers that prevent men from seeking medical and psychological assistance.

“Focusing on men’s mental health is vital if we want to build a resilient and stable society,” Kinyanga noted. “For too long, men have suffered in the shadows. Addressing their mental well-being ensures we have healthier families and a stronger community backbone.”

The forum also shed light on a growing generational gap. Community leaders warned that young men and boys are increasingly being left behind in modern empowerment and social support conversations.

Daniel Karinda, the founder of the Okoa Boychild initiative in Taita-Taveta County, made an urgent appeal to the community to unite and build a safe, healthy environment that protects young men alongside girls. He strongly cautioned men against internalizing their struggles, directly linking prolonged silence to preventable tragedies like suicide.

“The boy child is an essential pillar of our society and deserves the exact same focus and resources that we give to the girl child,” Karinda stated during his address. “I am pleading with our men: do not stay silent. Come out and speak about the heavy burdens and pressures you are carrying so that you can get the right help.”

Recognizing that speaking out requires structured support, Karinda reassured residents that local advocacy groups have built accessible networks of professional counselors specifically trained to handle male-centric trauma and depression.

“We must realize that suicide is entirely preventable if we intervene early,” Karinda added. “Through the Okoa Boychild organization, we have professional psychologists who are fully equipped and ready to support you. We are here to listen, guide you, and restore your mental health.”

In addition to mental health counseling, the forum provided participants with open dialogue spaces to address domestic pressures, alongside free medical check-ups aimed at promoting holistic wellness.

Silent Crisis: escalating family pressures drive Taita Taveta men to suicide

0

Escalating family-related challenges have been cited as a major catalyst for severe mental distress among men in Taita Taveta County. Experts are now warning that the growing psychological burden is tragically driving many men in the region to take their own lives.

The revelations emerged during a men’s mental health advocacy forum held at the Msharinyi Full Gospel Church in Marungu Ward, Voi constituency. The community outreach event, dubbed Jamvi Mashinani, was jointly organized by Sifa FM and Transworld Radio Kenya to break the silence surrounding male psychological trauma.

Speakers at the forum noted that economic hardships and hidden domestic conflicts are quietly destroying the mental well-being of local men. Among the chief triggers identified were marital disputes, physical assault against husbands by their spouses, and the immense pressure placed on men who are unable to sufficiently provide for their families.

Compounding the crisis is the heavy social stigma men face when attempting to report domestic abuse to law enforcement authorities. Alvin, a resident and participant at the event, shared the profound impact the training had on the local attendees.

“We have been suffering in silence because society expects a man to always be tough and never complain,” Alvin said. “Today we have learned that seeking help is not a weakness. We have been equipped with better ways to handle stress before it overwhelms us.”

His sentiments were echoed by the host minister, who urged men to turn away from self-destructive paths and embrace open dialogue within their households.

“As the clergy, we are deeply concerned by the number of men we are losing to suicide due to depression,” the Pastor stated. “Family pressures are real, but taking your own life is never the solution. We are calling upon all men to embrace communication. Let us talk to each other, talk to counselors, and resolve these domestic conflicts through peaceful dialogue rather than bottling up pain.”

The unique forum brought together local men, mental health clinicians, public health officers, and religious leaders to discuss solutions to the growing crisis.

Sifa FM Voi Station Manager, Linda Akoth, challenged the participants to aggressively confront the stigma associated with being a male victim of abuse. She urged men to report gender-based violence (GBV) without fear of ridicule.

“We must change the narrative surrounding men and abuse,” Ms. Akoth urged. “I want to challenge every man here today to be bold. If you are facing physical or psychological violence at home, do not hide it out of shame. Walk into our police stations and report these cases.”

Beyond the psychosocial support, attendees received free medical screenings and healthcare advice from student medics and facilitators from the Mwatate Medical Training College. This vital sensitization campaign coincided with Men’s Health Month this June, emphasizing the global importance of mental wellness and early medical intervention for men.

Gachagua warns of growing threats to press freedom ahead of 2027 elections

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised concerns over what he describes as increasing threats to press freedom in Kenya, alleging that journalists, bloggers and independent media houses are facing intimidation ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday, Gachagua claimed that media practitioners reporting on corruption, governance and public accountability were increasingly being targeted through threats, harassment and intimidation.

“We have witnessed a worrying pattern in Kenya where, ahead of general elections, journalists and bloggers become targets of unpopular regimes that fear the power of the people at the ballot,” Gachagua said.

The former deputy president cited an incident on June 25 in which a journalist was allegedly assaulted by a police officer while covering protests in Nairobi. He also claimed that armed men believed to be police officers attempted to abduct Standard Group Associate Editor Nixon Kiplimo in Nakuru on June 26, although the attempt was unsuccessful.

Gachagua further accused the government of interfering with media independence following the publication of reports critical of the administration.

“This attack is an open defiance of the truth and a direct assault on media freedom as guaranteed under Article 34 of the Constitution,” he said.

He alleged that several senior journalists and editors were under surveillance and warned that the government would be held accountable should any harm come to members of the press.

“I have received confidential information that some senior journalists and editors have been marked for intimidation and silencing. If anything happens to any journalist in Kenya, whether local or foreign, this government must take responsibility,” Gachagua said.

The former deputy president also alleged that journalists from a local media house had been subjected to physical and online harassment, while journalist Muthoni Wakirumba had reportedly received threats from political leaders.

He called on media owners, editors and journalists to remain united and defend editorial independence despite what he termed as growing pressure.

“We call on all media houses, journalists and editors to stand in solidarity with one another. Stand firm and speak the truth on behalf of Kenyans. You remain the last line of defence for the people as the country heads towards the 2027 General Election,” he said.

Gachagua also condemned recent restrictions on media operations in Uganda, warning that attacks on press freedom across East Africa pose a threat to democracy.

He urged the United Nations, international media freedom organizations and regional bodies to closely monitor developments in Kenya and Uganda, maintaining that freedom of expression and media freedom are protected under Articles 33 and 34 of the Constitution.
