Ol Kalou By-Election Becomes a Political Battle for Influence in Mt Kenya

The upcoming Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election scheduled for July 16 has emerged as one of the most closely watched political contests in the Mt Kenya region ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The race is largely viewed as a contest between supporters of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, highlighting the growing political rivalry over influence in the region.

The main contest is expected to be between United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Muchina Nyaga and Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Kamau Ngotho, who has received backing from Gachagua’s political camp.

Political analysts say the by-election has shifted from a local leadership contest to a symbolic battle that could determine which political side holds greater influence in the Mt Kenya region.

However, some residents have expressed concern that national political rivalries are overshadowing local development issues, urging candidates to focus on unemployment, infrastructure and economic challenges affecting the people of Ol Kalou.

The outcome of the election is expected to shape political strategies as the country moves closer to the 2027 polls.
