Captain Odegaard fires Arsenal to CL opener victory at Napoli

Date:

Arsenal continued their flawless start to the 2026/27 campaign as skipper Martin Ødegaard produced a moment of brilliance to seal a 1–0 victory over Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in their UEFA Champions League league phase opener.

After unrelenting pressure from the Gunners, substitute Christos Tzolis laid the ball off to Martin Ødegaard, who unleashed a fierce 20-yard strike off the post and in to break the deadlock.

Mikel Arteta’s side controlled the tempo from the opening whistle, forcing Massimiliano Allegri’s Napoli into a deep defensive block and registering their highest away shot tally in a Champions League fixture on record.

The Gunners could have won by a larger margin, with Bukayo Saka, Piero Hincapie, and Noni Madueke all spurning clear chances to double the tally late on.

Arsenal extend their 100% record this season ahead of a Saturday trip to face Sunderland in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Napoli look to bounce back from three consecutive defeats as Massimiliano Allegri attempts to steady the ship in Serie A.
