President William Ruto has described the 2027 General Election as a watershed moment for Kenya, saying the polls should mark the beginning of a new political era anchored on national unity, inclusivity and a shared national purpose.
Ruto said the election should bring an end to what he termed politics of tribalism, division and discrimination, urging Kenyans to rally behind a common national transformation agenda regardless of their region, religion or background.
“The 2027 General Election will be a watershed for our country, bringing to an end the politics of tribalism, division and discrimination, and ushering in a new chapter defined by national unity, inclusivity and a shared national purpose,” the President said.
He added that Kenyans should focus on building a country where opportunities are expanded for every citizen without discrimination based on geographical, religious or social background.
According to Ruto, the envisioned political shift would allow the country to move beyond identity-based politics and instead unite citizens around a common development and transformation agenda.
“As a result, Kenyans will rally together around a common national transformation agenda, expanding opportunity for every citizen regardless of the region, religion or background,” he said.
The President also linked the vision to his previous political engagement with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, saying the two had envisioned a Kenya defined by greater unity and shared national aspirations.
“This is the Kenya we envisioned with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga,” Ruto said.
Ruto’s remarks come as political parties and leaders increasingly position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election, with national alliances and political formations taking shape.
The President has in recent months placed national unity and an agenda-based approach to politics at the center of his political messaging. During his current tour of Nyanza, he has also challenged political leaders to move away from what he describes as divisive politics and instead focus on issues affecting ordinary Kenyans.
In Kisumu on Monday, Ruto warned political leaders against using chaos, violence and divisive politics to advance their interests, saying Kenya has no room for leaders seeking to destabilize the country.
“We have raised the bar of leadership in Kenya. It is not about personalities; it is about the people,” Ruto said.
He also challenged opposition leaders to present Kenyans with clear political agendas ahead of the 2027 polls, arguing that the electorate should judge leaders based on their programmes and ability to deliver rather than personalities or ethnic affiliations.
The President’s latest remarks are likely to intensify the political debate over whether the 2027 election can mark a genuine shift from Kenya’s long-standing ethnic and regional political mobilization towards issue-based competition.
For Ruto, however, the election represents an opportunity to consolidate what he describes as a more inclusive national political and development agenda, with citizens from all regions expected to participate in shaping the country’s future.
With the 2027 polls approaching, the question of whether political parties and candidates will campaign primarily on policies and national issues, rather than ethnic and regional interests, is expected to remain a central theme of Kenya’s political debate.
