President William Ruto has pledged to accelerate the implementation of key development projects in Turkana County following a meeting with the county’s Senator and Members of Parliament at State House, Nairobi.
The meeting focused on unlocking Turkana’s economic potential by fast-tracking affordable housing, student hostels, modern markets, fishing infrastructure, roads and water projects, while also emphasizing the need to strengthen security, peace and social cohesion across the region.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, President Ruto said Turkana’s vast natural resources and economic potential should be fully harnessed for the benefit of residents and the country.
“We have agreed with the leaders from the county to accelerate the completion of ongoing development projects, including affordable housing, student hostels, modern markets, fishing infrastructure, and road and water development,” Ruto said.
He added that security, peace and cohesion remain critical to unlocking Turkana’s full economic potential and creating opportunities for its people.
The meeting was attended by Turkana Senator James Lomenen and Members of Parliament from the county. Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai, who heads the county government responsible for implementing devolved functions, did not attend the meeting. No reason for his absence was immediately provided.
Senator Lomenen said the leaders had aligned key priorities with the national government to accelerate development projects.
“Unlocking Turkana’s vast economic potential requires strategic national partnership. We have aligned key priorities to accelerate ongoing projects, including affordable housing, modern markets, student hostels, road and water infrastructure, and fishing facilities. Peace and security remain our top priority. Under a structured government, Turkana’s progress is non-negotiable,” he said.
The meeting came after President Ruto hosted more than 10,000 village elders at State House on Tuesday, where he announced that 106,000 village elders had been integrated into the National Government Administration system.
The engagement also carried political undertones, with some Turkana leaders publicly backing President Ruto’s bid for a second term, chanting “Two Term” slogans, although the official discussions focused on development priorities.
