Nairobi, Kenya – Mukurweini Member of Parliament John Kaguchia was arrested by detectives on Monday morning outside the Royal Media Services headquarters in Nairobi after spending the night inside the media house.
The legislator had remained at the station overnight, claiming that police officers were waiting outside to arrest him following controversial political remarks he allegedly made during an interview on Inooro TV’s Kiririmbi programme.
The arrest comes amid growing criticism of comments attributed to Kaguchia, which allegedly threatened supporters of President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election. The remarks have drawn condemnation from political leaders and other public figures, who described the language as inflammatory and inappropriate in a democratic society.
On Sunday night, Kaguchia took to social media, declaring, “I will not be intimidated,” while alleging that a heavy police presence had surrounded the Royal Media Services premises immediately after his television appearance. He also claimed that security officers had mounted roadblocks around the area in anticipation of his arrest.
Kaguchia remained inside the media house until Monday morning, when detectives arrested him shortly after he exited the building. Reports indicate that a senior police officer arrived at the station and ordered that the MP be produced before he was driven away in a police vehicle to an undisclosed location.
The arrest is understood to be linked to ongoing investigations into alleged threatening and inciteful political remarks.
Following the arrest, Kaguchia’s lawyers said they were working to establish where their client was being held and to determine the next legal steps. Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka was also seen accompanying the MP as he left the studios before his arrest.
Meanwhile, residents and motorists using Maalim Juma Road off Dennis Pritt Road reported a heavy police presence in the area on Sunday night. Witnesses said hooded officers stopped and inspected vehicles leaving the vicinity, causing traffic congestion and inconvenience to road users.
By the time of publication, police had not issued an official statement confirming the charges, if any, that Kaguchia may face, as investigations continue.
