At least five Kenyan security officers four members of the elite Special Operations Group (SOG) and one National Police Reservist (NPR) were killed on Tuesday during a coordinated al-Shabaab attack along the Kenya-Somalia border.
The incident occurred in the El-Raamo area of Kutulo, along the Alungu Main Supply Route (MSR). Police report that an improvised explosive device (IED), allegedly planted on July 21, detonated under the patrol vehicle. Militants lying in wait then launched a fierce ambush, engaging the SOG officers in a heavy gunfight that left several other officers injured.
A rescue and reinforcement team dispatched to the scene was subsequently demobilized after its armored vehicle struck another IED and was destroyed. The waiting gunmen engaged the reinforcement unit, delaying emergency response before escaping into the surrounding area.
Police confirmed that no officers in the response team sustained injuries during the second blast.
The injured officers from the primary attack were airlifted to Nairobi for emergency treatment. Senior security officials, led by Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, visited the wounded officers in the hospital. Security agencies have launched a full investigation, deploying reinforcement units to secure the region and track down the attackers.
The fatal ambush highlights a broader surge in suspected al-Shabaab activity across Kenya’s northeastern border counties.
On Sunday at dawn, suspected militants targeted a Safaricom telecommunications mast in Abakaile village, Garissa County, damaging the mast’s door inside a school compound though no explosives were detonated and all teachers were safely accounted for. Separately, on Friday night, officers at the Arabia Police Station in Mandera successfully repulsed an assault by roughly eight militants using rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and heavy gunfire, suffering zero casualties.
Mandera and surrounding border regions continue to face persistent cross-border incursions targeting security personnel, critical infrastructure, and public transport. Kenya originally deployed the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) into Somalia under Operation Linda Nchi in October 2011 to combat the militant group, an effort later integrated into the African Union peace support mission in Somalia.
