EACC dismisses fake cabinet vetting letter

Date:

NAIROBI –The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has dismissed as fake a letter circulating on social media claiming that the National Assembly had requested the Commission to vet five individuals allegedly nominated for Cabinet positions.

In a statement shared on its official social media platforms, the anti-graft agency urged Kenyans to disregard the document, emphasizing that it did not originate from either the National Assembly or the Commission.

The forged letter, dated July 23, 2026, was allegedly addressed to EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Ahmed Mohamud and falsely claimed that the Commission had been asked to conduct integrity vetting for five purported Cabinet nominees.

Those named in the fake document included Winnie Odinga for the Tourism and Wildlife docket, Junet Mohamed for Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development, Koki Muli for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Cleophas Malala for Agriculture and Livestock Development, and Dr Agnes Zani for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy.

The document further claimed that the vetting exercise was intended to ensure transparency and accountability in public appointments and that EACC had been asked to submit its findings by July 28, 2026.

The letter quickly gained traction online, sparking speculation over a possible Cabinet reshuffle.

However, EACC dismissed the claims and published a copy of the document stamped “FAKE,” saying it was “not an authentic communication from the Commission.”

The Commission also pointed out several inconsistencies in the document, including grammatical mistakes, incomplete sentences and poor formatting, despite its use of what appeared to be official letterheads and signatures.

The agency urged members of the public to verify information through official government channels before sharing it on social media.
