Sifuna leads push for new political party ahead of 2027 general election

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is expected to lead a group of leaders planning to leave ODM after the Linda Mwananchi faction endorsed him for a 2027 presidential bid under a new political party.

The decision was reached during a meeting convened by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and attended by Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga, Bumula MP Wamboka Wanami and other leaders.

The leaders said they were in the final stages of forming a new political party for the 2027 General Election. The move also comes as Sifuna faces a legal dispute over his position as ODM Secretary-General.

Speaking after the meeting, Senator Osotsi said they were still considering using the name Linda Mwananchi, despite the Registrar of Political Parties rejecting its registration earlier this year.

“If we decide to proceed with the name, we will challenge the Registrar’s decision in court because we believe it lacks a sound legal basis,” said Osotsi.

He added that the party would bring together leaders from across the country, not just the Western region.

The group plans to hold major political rallies in Trans Nzoia and Bungoma counties on July 25 and 26 to officially launch its political strategy ahead of the 2027 polls.

Meanwhile, Funyula MP Wilberforce Oundo said that if they fail to register a new party in time, they will acquire an already registered party to use as their political vehicle.

At the same time, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale confirmed his association with the newly formed United Patriotic Movement (UPM), saying it would unite leaders seeking to limit President William Ruto to a single term.

The developments signal major political realignments as Kenya heads towards the 2027 General Election.
