Striker Erling Haaland emerged as Norway’s hero after scoring a dramatic late winner in the 86th minute to secure a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match played on Tuesday night in Dallas, Texas, United States.
Ivory Coast controlled large spells of possession throughout the contest but failed to capitalize on several promising opportunities in front of goal.
Norway broke the deadlock in the 39th minute through Antonio Nusa, who punished a defensive lapse by Ivory Coast to give his side a narrow lead heading into the halftime break.
Amad Diallo restored hope for the Elephants by equalizing in the 74th minute during their first-ever appearance in the World Cup knockout stage.
However, Ivory Coast’s defensive shortcomings proved costly once again, as Haaland was left unmarked to fire home the decisive goal four minutes from time.
“We knew it was going to be a difficult match, but we stayed calm until the very end,” Haaland said after the game.
The victory sends Norway through to the Round of 16, where they will face five-time world champions Brazil.
