MARSABIT — Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Marsabit Branch representative John Behailu has opposed the Marsabit Municipality’s move to introduce parking fees in Marsabit town centre, threatening to file a case in court if the charges are not suspended.
Speaking to journalists in his office, Behailu said public participation was not conducted before implementation, particularly among matatu, boda boda operators and other motorists.
He said no adequate parking areas have been designated, noting that Kenya Lodge, Jeyjey Centre and near Kenya Postal Corporation areas cited by the municipality cannot accommodate vehicles and boda bodas due to limited space.
He faulted the municipality for not involving stakeholders including the Marsabit County Assembly, saying it is contrary to law.
Behailu said municipal enforcement officers are too few to manage the exercise and asked the county government to recruit more officers.
He urged the municipality to enact a law to regulate parking fee collection to protect operators from arbitrary fines by enforcement officers.
He also called for digital payments to curb misappropriation, warning of a possible strike by motorists in Marsabit town if concerns are not addressed.
His remarks come as Marsabit Municipality officially rolled out parking fees in the town centre on Thursday, September 3, 2026, as part of efforts to improve parking and traffic management.
Drivers using designated spaces at Kenya Lodge, near Kenya Posta and Jeyjey Centre will be required to pay set fees, with motorists and traders urged to cooperate as enforcement begins.
