The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has approved charges against former Sports Ministry Secretary, Ambassador Peter Kirimi Kaberia, four other government officials and five businessmen over the alleged misappropriation of KSh330 million in public funds.
The funds had been allocated towards preparations for Kenya’s hosting of the 2018 African Nations Championship, CHAN.
According to the Office of the DPP, the decision follows investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), which submitted the investigation file to the DPP for review.
The DPP says that after an independent and thorough assessment of the evidence, it established “sufficient grounds” to charge the suspects and the companies involved.
Apart from Kaberia, those facing charges are Stephen Njoroge Muthuma, Harun Chebet Komen, Enock Ondwari Onditi and John Kiende Ruga.
The businessmen named in the case are Marcos Gonzalez Puente, Samuel Mbai Njoroge, Kitheka Muema, Anthony Mwangi Kimanthi and Ephraim Kinyua Muchangi.
Six companies have also been linked to the case.
The suspects face charges including abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property, failure to comply with procurement laws, dealing with proceeds of crime and financial misconduct.
