Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has thrown his weight behind Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s presidential ambitions, declaring that he is willing to serve as Sifuna’s running mate if political arithmetic reveals the 44-year-old senator is best placed to defeat President William Ruto in 2027.
Addressing a diaspora gathering in Spokane, Washington, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader dismissed critics who claim Sifuna is too young for the nation’s top seat. He pointed out that world leaders such as Barack Obama and Franklin D. Roosevelt assumed presidency at ages 47 and 42, respectively, proving that a 44-year-old can effectively lead Kenya.
Gachagua stressed that the opposition’s primary objective must be agreeing on a single candidate to secure a first-round victory against President Ruto. He floated various formulas blending “youthful energy with experience,” including pairing Sifuna with himself or Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka in either position.
Urging the political class to stop sidelining younger politicians, Gachagua insisted that youth are “leaders of today” and urged Sifuna not to be discouraged by opposition from senior politicians like COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli.
Gachagua noted that backing Sifuna would be easier for the Mt Kenya region compared to past political decisions, citing Sifuna’s clean political record and lack of past political baggage.
Gachagua concluded by reiterating that while he believes his own presidential candidacy is strong, he is fully prepared to put personal ambitions aside and give way if another contender demonstrates a clearer path to victory.
This declaration comes as Sifuna continues to build momentum nationwide through his Linda Mwananchi movement alongside key opposition figures.
