Preacher and veteran politician Bishop Margaret Wanjiru has officially declared her intention to contest the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a Sunday sermon at Jesus Is Alive Ministries, Wanjiru announced that she will be seeking the county’s top seat under the banner of the newly formed Kenya Moja Movement Party.
“I, Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, declare that I will contest for the position of Nairobi Governor on a Kenya Moja Movement Party ticket. This is not a personal ambition; it is a call to serve, and today I am answering that call.”
Wanjiru outlined her platform, titled “Nairobi Mpya,” which she stated aims to restore dignity, accountability, and effective public services to the capital city. Her key policy areas include:
Addressing garbage collection failures and environmental degradation across city estates.
Expanding reliable water supplies and upgrading county road networks.
Enforcing transparency and prudent management of county funds.
Creating a business-friendly environment to stimulate job creation and support local entrepreneurs.
Wanjiru’s announcement follows her resignation as Chairperson of the Nairobi Rivers Commission. The former Starehe MP previously sought the Nairobi governor seat in 2022 under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) before stepping aside in favor of incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja following coalition negotiations.
Her official entry into the race adds a major candidate to the contest for Kenya’s capital, where she will face competition from incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja and other aspirants.
