Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor faces a difficult task in selecting his starting lineup against Egyptian giants Pyramids FC, with competition for places intensifying in camp.
Gor Mahia is putting the final touches to its preparations for the opening match of the 2026/2027 CAF Champions League campaign, scheduled for Sunday at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, with kick-off set for 3:00 PM East Africa Time.
Today September 4, 2026 Gor Mahia full-back Paul Ochuoga says the mood in camp is positive, with most players in good physical condition and eager to earn a place in the starting lineup for the important continental fixture.
Ochuoga, who was recently included in the provisional Harambee Stars squad, says the strong competition for places has left Akonnor with a difficult decision to make ahead of the clash against Pyramids FC.
“The preparation has been good. The mood is good. Everyone wants to play. The coach will have a hard time selecting a squad because everyone wants to play. Everyone wants to play this game because it’s a big game. It’s a big match. There are a lot of players who want to play, including me,” Ochuoga said.
Despite Pyramids FC’s experience on the African stage, Ochuoga says Gor Mahia will approach the match with confidence and a positive mindset, while focusing on executing the tactical plan provided by their coach.
“So, it’s going to be a good game. We will approach it in a positive way. Every piece of information that the coach has given us, we will implement in the game,” he added.
Gor Mahia defender Shariff Musa has called on the club’s supporters to turn up in large numbers at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday and rally behind the team in their CAF Champions League encounter against Egyptian side Pyramids FC.
Musa says the support of the fans will be crucial as Gor Mahia begins its continental campaign at home, with the team seeking a positive result before travelling to Egypt for the second leg.
Gor Mahia Coach Charles Akonnor, who guided Gor Mahia to their 22nd FKF Premier League title last season, now has a highly competitive squad at his disposal, with players showing strong motivation to feature in the continental encounter.
Gor Mahia will be hoping to secure a favourable home result before the return leg in Cairo on September 13, where the two sides will battle for a place in the next stage of the competition.
