3,600 Turkana residents set to receive KSh 200M oil land compensation

Date:

LODWAR — The National Land Commission (NLC), in partnership with the Department of Lands and the State Department of Petroleum, has officially briefed Turkana County Commissioner Julius Kavita on upcoming land compensation and community demarcation activities tied to the region’s upstream oil development project.

The National Treasury has set aside KSh 200 million for the initial phase of the exercise, which will compensate approximately 3,600 Project Affected Persons (PAPs) whose structures and property were impacted by the development. Alongside the payouts, a delegation led by Leah Losuru from the Department of Lands briefed local administration on upcoming community sensitization, land surveying, and demarcation across Lorengippi, Lokiriama, and Nakurio.

County Commissioner Kavita urged the joint team to prioritize transparency, peacebuilding, and rigorous due diligence throughout the verification process.

“The compensation process must be carried out carefully, ensuring all affected persons and structures are properly verified,” Kavita stated, promising full administrative support to keep the exercise running smoothly.

Following the briefing, the joint multi-agency team met with Deputy County Secretary for Administration Joseph Nyang’a, who pledged the county government’s complete cooperation in delivering a transparent, peaceful exercise.
