Safe space for children: NPS launches BMZ-funded child protection unit in Moyale

Date:

The National Police Service (NPS) has officially received a newly constructed Child Protection Unit (CPU) at Moyale Police Station.

The facility, which was officially handed over on Tuesday, 21July 2026, provides a safe, child-friendly space for vulnerable children to report abuse and access justice without fear of secondary victimisation.

Funded by the German Cooperation (BMZ) through Terre des Hommes and implemented by Strategies for Northern Development (SND) in partnership with NPS, the unit is a major step in safeguarding child rights in Marsabit County.

Speaking on behalf of Inspector-General Douglas Kanja, Gender and Child Protection Director AIG Dolly Oduor called the CPU a reflection of NPS’s transformation into a people-centred, victim-focused service.

She urged Moyale residents to use the facility and directed officers to uphold integrity and empathy when handling child cases. Kanja also thanked BMZ, SND and all partners for making the project possible.

Under the NPS Strategic Plan 2023–2027, the Moyale CPU will eventually be upgraded to a full POLICARE Centre, offering police, medical, psychosocial, legal and forensic services under one roof.

The launch was attended by TDH Regional Coordinator Dennis Ratemo, SND’s Joan Kosgey, IGAD’s Galm Dida, Moyale Court Magistrate Willy Cheruiyot, NGAO officials, cross-border peace committee members, Marsabit CPC Leonard Kimaiyo, and other senior officers.
