The Marsabit County Government has called on local traders and residents to utilize homegrown resources to expand businesses, create jobs, and boost the county’s economy.
Deputy Governor Solomon Gubo Riwe made the appeal during the 104th International Day of Cooperatives (Ushirika Day) celebrations and business exhibition, held at the Marsabit Stadium in Saku Constituency.
Addressing hundreds of participants, Gubo highlighted that Marsabit is richly endowed with minerals and other natural assets that can unlock fresh business opportunities and spur sustainable economic development.
He challenged traders to prioritize locally available products rather than relying heavily on goods sourced from other counties and regions. “Let us invest in what we have here in Marsabit. Our minerals, honey, fish, and livestock can serve as the foundation for a stronger local economy,” Gubo urged.
The exhibition successfully brought together cooperative members and key stakeholders from across the county, including traders, farmers, financial institutions, Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Notable participants included fish vendors from Loyangalani, beekeepers showcasing premium honey products, traditional bead sellers, and both livestock and crop farmers.
In line with this year’s global theme, “Cooperatives for a Peaceful World,” the Deputy Governor strongly urged residents to maintain peace and unity. He emphasized that a peaceful and united community is essential for business and agriculture to thrive, adding, “As we approach the 2027 General Election, we must guard our unity jealously.”
Jeremy Ledany, the County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Tourism, Industry, and Cooperative Development, noted that the celebrations were crucial for raising awareness about the pivotal role cooperatives play in driving Marsabit’s economic agenda. He added that the event provided an invaluable platform for cooperative groups to network, exchange contacts, and access new markets for their products.
International and local event partners including the European Union, the World Food Programme (WFP), and the United Nations extended their gratitude to Marsabit residents for sustaining peace and cooperation. They concluded by urging citizens to continue working together to accelerate both economic and social development across the county.
