The inclusion of 17-year-old Louis Millard in the provisional Harambee Stars squad has renewed hope about the opportunities available to talented young footballers in Kenya, while his rise also highlights the importance of providing emerging players with the right environment to develop their abilities.
Millard is among three new players named by Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy in his 38-man provisional squad ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Eritrea and Guinea.
The youngster has reached this stage while still in the early stages of his senior career, having made just three appearances for English club Swindon Town after progressing through the club’s academy system.
His ability was also on display in competitive action after he scored a spectacular goal in Swindon Town’s 3-1 victory over Port Vale on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Millard dispossessed a defender, went on a solo run and calmly chipped the goalkeeper to score Swindon’s third goal.
Swindon Town head coach Ian Holloway has expressed great confidence in the youngster, highlighting his composure and confidence as some of the qualities that have stood out.
“To have that composure, I think he is just enjoying himself,” Holloway said while reflecting on Millard’s goal.
The coach said Millard regularly asks what he can do to continue improving, adding that players of his age need to be carefully managed while also being given opportunities to learn and showcase their abilities.
“He asks me everyday what can I do, where can I go. We have to be really careful with 17, 18-years-olds…you have to put them in and take them out but Oh my God! To come on like that and finish with such aplomb was beautiful,” Holloway said.
For Kenya, Millard’s progress brings renewed attention to the importance of investing in academies, developing young talent and giving emerging players opportunities to compete at higher levels.
His call-up to Harambee Stars at just 17 could also inspire other young footballers pursuing careers in the sport, demonstrating that age does not have to be a barrier when talent is supported with proper development and opportunities.
His inclusion in the provisional squad is already an important step in his football journey and could signal the emergence of a new generation of players ready to earn opportunities with the national team.
