Incident at Mombasa Maize Millers in Majengo as fire breaks out

Date:

A fire broke out earlier today at the premises associated with Mombasa Maize Millers in the Majengo/King’orani neighborhood of Mombasa County, drawing a swift response from emergency crews and local authorities.

Plumes of thick black smoke were seen rising above the residential and industrial hub of Majengo, causing panic among local residents and business owners. Bystanders reported hearing loud pops and seeing flames emerging from the facility before emergency services were alerted.

“We saw heavy smoke gathering around the site, and within minutes, people were shouting for everyone to move back. Traffic on the nearby access roads came to a standstill,” said a local vendor operating near the location.

Firefighters from the Mombasa County Fire Department, assisted by private security water tankers and local volunteers, arrived at the scene to contain the inferno and prevent it from spreading to adjacent commercial units and residential buildings.

Security personnel cordoned off the affected perimeter to manage crowd control and clear way for emergency vehicles. Traffic police redirected vehicles away from the immediate area as responders focused on extinguishing remaining hotspots.

No official fatalities have been confirmed. Emergency responders provided first aid on-site to individuals suffering from light smoke inhalation.

The exact extent of structural damage and loss of inventory remains under assessment by facility management and emergency teams.

Nearby residents have been advised to keep windows closed and avoid the area due to heavy particulate smoke.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established. Officers from the Kenya Police Service and county disaster management officials have launched a preliminary investigation to determine whether the blaze was triggered by an electrical fault, mechanical malfunction, or operational risk. Further updates will follow as authorities issue official statements.
