Danson Mungatana compares 2002 NARC wave with contemporary political landscape

Date:

Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has drawn sharp parallels and contrasts between the landmark 2002 General Election—which brought President Mwai Kibaki to power under the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC)—and Kenya’s current political climate.

Mungatana, who first rose to national prominence during the 2002 political transition as a young reformist, reflected on how the dynamics of political alliances, voter expectations, and governance have evolved over the past two decades.

The NARC wave was driven by a unified opposition intent on ending KANU’s 39-year rule. It relied on overwhelming public optimism and a singular focus on democratic renewal and economic recovery.

Modern political coalitions are increasingly fluid, driven by pragmatic re-alignments, economic realities, and real-time accountability demanded by a digitally connected electorate.

The primary mandate under Kibaki was resetting the macroeconomic environment, reviving free primary education, and rebuilding state institutions from the ground up.

The contemporary focus has shifted toward cost-of-living adjustments, debt management, and direct economic empowerment model debates.

Mungatana noted that institutional frameworks—including the independence of the judiciary and the electoral body—have strengthened significantly compared to the centralized executive dominance of the early 2000s.

Mungatana emphasized that while the 2002 election established Kenya’s democratic benchmark, today’s leaders face an electorate that is far less patient with political rhetoric and far more focused on immediate, measurable results.
