TAITA TAVETA – Taita Taveta County Governor Andrew Mwadime has called on Kenyans to back a new funding drive aimed at closing university financial gaps for vulnerable youth, speaking during the official launch of a 50-day countdown to a major cultural festival. The Governor emphasized that proceeds will build a dedicated kitty for needy university students, with priority given to locals, while simultaneously empowering the community through cultural showcase.
“Our main objective is to create an education fund to cover the gap left by the national government, Members of Parliament, and the county government for our students who are truly in need, while at the same time empowering our people,” Governor Mwadime stated. He urged residents and supporters nationwide to contribute by purchasing special branded t-shirts to raise funds.
Organized by Taita Taveta University in partnership with the County Government and key stakeholders, the event targets raising over KSh 1 billion. The festival will double as the inaugural launch of the annual Tsavo Cultural Festival, celebrating the community’s rich heritage with traditional dances such as Mwazindika and Urwasi.
University representative Dr. Nashon Adero highlighted the long-term impact of the initiative, noting, “Investing in quality education and skills development for the youth is something you cannot go wrong with, and this endowment fund will facilitate education for our youth.”
Scheduled for October 8th to 10th, 2026, the three-day program features diverse events across each day. The celebrations will open on Thursday, October 8th with the Battlefield Walk, cultural exhibitions, and an investors’ exhibition, culminating in a Governor’s welcome dinner and investors’ meeting at Voi Wildlife Lodge. The second day, Friday, October 9th, will feature the Battlefield Run, the Tsavo Rugby Tournament, a Bicycle Tour, and an Education and Entertainment Day.
The festival will conclude on Saturday, October 10th with a guided tour of Tsavo’s historic sites and a grand Cultural Festival and Fashion Show. The overall event will also host various athletic competitions, including 21KM, 10KM, and 5KM races, family runs, children’s races, and events specifically organized for persons with disabilities and disciplined forces. The Taita Taveta Press Club is among the key media partners supporting the initiative.
