MOMBASA — The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) fraternity is in mourning following a fatal road accident near Ahero that left two students dead and 29 others injured.
According to an official statement issued by TUM Vice Chancellor Prof. Laila U. Abubakar on August 7, 2026, the students were travelling to attend the burial of former student leader, Elvis “Beast” Otieno. The group had safely arrived in Kisumu to receive the body, which had been flown in from Mombasa, before setting off toward the burial location.
The accident occurred as the convoy approached Ahero. The driver of the final bus carrying mourners reportedly swerved to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming, over-speeding saloon car. In the process, control of the vehicle was lost, causing the bus to overturn and roll.
Two male students lost their lives at the scene, while 29 others sustained injuries of varying degrees. The injured students were rushed to nearby medical facilities and are currently undergoing treatment at Lisa Hospital in Ahero and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).
In her statement, Vice Chancellor Prof. Abubakar offered her heartfelt condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of the deceased students on behalf of the University Council, Management, Senate, and staff. She also expressed deep gratitude to local emergency responders, medical teams, security forces, and members of the public who stepped in swiftly to aid the victims following the crash.
