Former Interior Cabinet Secretary and Jubilee presidential flag bearer, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, has outlined a strategy to form a united opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a consultative engagement, Matiang’i emphasized that ongoing talks among opposition figures aim to construct a principled, structure-driven political platform to prevent the infighting and fallout that historically plague post-election alliances in Kenya.
“We are putting special plans in place to unite all of us and our parties so that we can see how we will go to the election together,” said Matiang’i. “We want to avoid that history where we unite, and then after the election, we start fighting.”
Participating political entities will not be forced to fold up. Instead, they will maintain their individual operations while establishing a unified line on executive positions, including the presidency and deputy presidency.
The alliance intends to center its platform on agreed governance principles, economic recovery plans, and constitutional adherence rather than individual personalities.
Addressing concerns over naming a single presidential candidate, Matiang’i urged patience, noting that securing genuine buy-in from all partner leaders is far more critical than prematurely announcing a flagbearer.
Ongoing alignment talks will systematically involve civil society, religious leaders, women’s networks, and youth organizations to shape a national agenda.
The movement toward a single, formidable opposition ticket has seen Matiang’i step up engagements with high-profile figures—including former Chief Justice David Maraga and members of the Linda Mwananchi movement.
By establishing shared goals well ahead of the official campaign trail, the coalition hopes to present voters with a structured, stable alternative to the current administration when the country heads to the polls in 2027.
