Obucuun Borders from Teso, Busia, have been crowned the 2026 Ateker Cup of Nations champions after defeating Kumi FC of Uganda 4–3 on penalties following a 1–1 draw in regulation time.
Obucuun Borders produced a composed performance in the final before holding their nerve during the penalty shootout to claim the championship trophy and approximately KSh 174,000 in prize money.
The victory gives the Teso, Busia side the honour of becoming the 2026 Ateker Cup of Nations champions, after overcoming a strong Kumi FC side from Uganda in a closely contested final.
The second edition of the Ateker Cup of Nations was held in Soroti City, Uganda, from August 16 to 22, 2026. The regional tournament brings together communities from Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan and Ethiopia, including the Turkana, Iteso, Karimojong, Toposa and Nyangatom communities.
While Obucuun Borders celebrated a major regional victory, the tournament produced a disappointing outcome for the 18 teams representing Turkana.
Despite entering the competition with a large contingent, none of the Turkana teams reached the final. Kalokol Rangers were the only Turkana side to progress as far as the quater-finals, while the other representatives exited the tournament earlier.
Teams such as Lamasia FC and Andnaath Boys from the refugee camp were among the Turkana representatives that failed to make a deep run in the competition.
The results have raised questions about the level of preparation and competitiveness of Turkana teams when facing opponents from across the Ateker region. Having 18 teams in the tournament demonstrated the strong interest in football across Turkana, but the results showed that participation numbers did not translate into a strong challenge for the championship.
For Obucuun Borders, however, the story is very different. Their penalty-shootout victory over Kumi FC has placed them at the top of the Ateker football region and given their supporters a major reason to celebrate.
The Ateker Cup of Nations remains more than a football tournament. It provides an opportunity for communities across borders to interact, celebrate their shared cultural connections and build relationships through sport.
For the 2026 edition, the biggest celebration belongs to Obucuun Borders, who return to Teso, Busia, as champions.
For Turkana, the performance of the 18 participating teams will likely trigger reflection ahead of the next edition.
