Lamu Community Urged to Uphold Peace After Mosque Killing

Religious and community leaders in Lamu County have called on residents to maintain peace, unity, and harmony following a recent violent incident that shocked the region.

The appeal comes after the killing of Khalid Makka, a 33-year-old man who was stabbed to death during midday prayers at Jamia Mosque in Faza town last month. The incident, which occurred inside a place of worship, has raised concern among residents and religious leaders, who described it as deeply disturbing and unacceptable.

Speaking during community engagements, the leaders urged residents to avoid revenge, misinformation, or actions that could escalate tensions within the community. They emphasized that Lamu has long been known for peaceful coexistence and interfaith harmony, and that such values must be protected despite isolated incidents of violence.

They also called on security agencies to speed up investigations and ensure that all those responsible for the killing are arrested and brought before a court of law. According to the leaders, justice is essential in restoring public confidence and preventing further unrest.

In addition, youth in the region were encouraged to embrace discipline, good morals, and respect for religious spaces. The leaders stressed that young people play a key role in shaping the future of the community and should avoid activities that could lead to conflict or crime.

Authorities have increased security monitoring in the area as investigations into the incident continue, with residents being urged to cooperate with law enforcement officers.
